With a storm expected to bring rain and strong winds to Massachusetts this weekend, the Departments would like to remind residents to take steps now to prepare and stay safe.
Ipswich Police, Fire and Harbormasters remind the community that numerous boats in Ipswich waters still remain on moorings. High waves and strong winds could drag moorings and snap lines, causing boats to drift and ground. Heavy rain could overwhelm bilge pumps.
Residents are urged to avoid boating or recreational swimming during this weekend’s expected storm.
If the storm is severe enough, it could be too dangerous for public safety crews to respond to any water emergencies, including sinking or adrift boats, and may not be able to respond to anyone operating out on the water for recreational purposes. Extreme conditions could occur as early as Friday afternoon.
Ipswich Public Safety officials will be monitoring the storm and will provide updates on social media as to when the departments may be suspending water operations.
Before the storm, residents should take precautions to ensure their homes and families are prepared for the weather. Create or review your family emergency plan, particularly if you live in an area prone to flooding, and make sure your emergency kit is stocked. Be prepared in the event you lose electricity for multiple days.
- Emergency kits should include flashlights, extra batteries, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, first-aid supplies, necessary medications, important documents, water and other essential items.
- Residents should also charge cellphones and other electronic devices before the storm and secure or bring inside outdoor furniture, decorations and other objects that could be blown around by strong winds.
- In the event you lose power, use battery-operated flashlights rather than open flame. If using a generator, make sure it is utilized outdoors and at least 10 feet from a building.
Before and during the storm, monitor local weather forecasts and emergency alerts, as conditions can change quickly.
During periods of severe weather, avoid unnecessary travel and never drive through flooded roadways. Stay away from downed trees, power lines and utility wires, and always assume a downed wire is live.
If local officials issue an evacuation order, leave immediately and follow all instructions from public safety officials. Bring only essential items, documents and pets, if possible.
